The Role Of Silica Sol in Battery Separators

Jul 18, 2026 Leave a message

Silica sol is a colloidal solution formed by dispersing nano-sized silica particles in water or an organic solvent. When coated onto the surface of a battery separator, it significantly improves several properties of the separator:

Enhanced Thermal Stability: The silica sol coating effectively improves the separator's high-temperature resistance and reduces thermal shrinkage, which is crucial for preventing battery short circuits.

Optimized Electrolyte Wetting: The porous structure of silica sol helps the electrolyte distribute more evenly on the separator surface, thereby improving the battery's charge and discharge efficiency.

Enhanced Mechanical Strength: The addition of nano-silica particles increases the separator's rigidity, reducing the risk of breakage during production and use.
