Uses Of Silica Sol in Silicon Carbide Ceramics

The application of silica sol in silicon carbide ceramics mainly manifests in three aspects: Optimizing material properties as a sintering aid, enhancing green body strength as a forming binder, and achieving efficient silica sol concentration as a filter medium. Its role spans the entire process of material preparation, processing, and post-treatment, playing a crucial role in improving the density, mechanical properties, and production efficiency of silicon carbide ceramics.

Optimizing Material Properties as a Sintering Aid

During the sintering process of silicon carbide ceramics, silica sol acts as a high-temperature binder, and its addition amount significantly affects material properties. Studies have shown that when silica sol accounts for 40% of the additive mass, the porosity of silicon carbide ceramics reaches its minimum, while the bulk density and flexural strength reach their peak values. This phenomenon stems from the glassy phase formed by silica sol at high temperatures, which effectively fills the voids between ceramic particles, enhancing the interparticle adhesion and thus improving the macroscopic mechanical properties of the material. However, if the silica sol content is too high (e.g., exceeding 45%), excessive liquid glassy phase will flow to the bottom of the ceramic under gravity, leading to color differences between the upper and lower layers and a decrease in mechanical properties. Therefore, precisely controlling the silica sol content is crucial for optimizing the performance of silicon carbide ceramics.

As a molding binder to enhance green body strength

In gel casting, silica sol acts as a dispersant and binder, mixed with ceramic raw material powder, organic monomers, initiators, and catalysts to form a premix. After this premix is poured into the mold, the organic monomers form a three-dimensional gel network through polymerization, causing the uniformly dispersed ceramic powder to solidify in situ, resulting in a green body with a uniform structure. The addition of silica sol not only improves the strength of the green body but also enables it to meet machining requirements, facilitating subsequent processing. Furthermore, gel casting offers advantages such as low total organic matter content, simplified debinding process, and uniform, defect-free green body structure, further improving the preparation efficiency and quality of silicon carbide ceramics.

As a filter medium for efficient silica sol concentration

In the silica sol production process, concentration is a key step in increasing product concentration. Silicon carbide ceramic membranes, with their high throughput, corrosion resistance, easy cleaning, and long lifespan, have become an ideal filter medium for silica sol concentration. Silicon carbide ceramic membrane ultrafiltration units utilize positive pressure drive, achieving solid-liquid separation within a transmembrane pressure difference range of 0.2-0.6 bar. They are suitable for concentrating silica sol products of varying particle sizes. The processing scale is adaptable, the process is simple and easily automated, and it maintains stable and long-lasting filtration performance. During silica sol concentration, the silicon carbide ceramic membrane effectively prevents membrane fouling. Regular cleaning and chemical cleaning remove components and low-molecular-weight salts deposited on the membrane surface, ensuring membrane permeability and retention rate.
